For most of the search engines meta tags are not required to index your site, but to be in a safer side its better that you optimize your website for all the search engines. There is no much work involved or special talent needed to create a meta tag, there are few guide lines which you have to follow in order to make your webpage’s meta tags effective.

So first let me brush up some basic info about META Keyword Tags…

Meta Keyword tag is a HTML tag which is used to supply keywords to search engine spiders (or robots). It mainly helps the spiders to determine your webpage and you will find the META Keyword tag below the HEAD tag which looks something like this:

Nowadays META keyword tag has lost its value, search engines have become smarter these days. They have set their algorithms and some other formulas to identify web pages with their relevancies. But still there is no harm in utilizing this tag if you are planning for better results.

Rewrite engine is a web server software application which helps us to modify URLs before fetching the requested items.

Rewrite Engine for Apache HTTP server:
“mod_rewrite” – Apache HTTP server has a rewrite engine known as mod_rewrite, which has been described as “the Swiss Army knife of URL manipulation”

Rewrite engines for Microsoft’s Internet Information Server (IIS):

1. IISRewrite from Qwerksoft

2. ISAPI_Rewrite from isapirewrite.com

3. URL Replacer from Motobit

4. Ionic’s ISAPI Rewrite Filter (IIRF) (open source) from Ionic Shade.

Rewrite HttpModule for Microsoft ASP.NET:
“URLRewriting.NET”

Rewrite engine for Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EE) Servlet container servers:

1. Apache Tomcat, Resin, Orion etc)

2. HttpRedirectFilter (open source)

3. UrlRewriteFilter (open source) – allows you to rewrite URLs before they get to your Servlets, JSP’s, Struts etc

4. URL Rewriter (open source – LGPL) – URL Rewriter is a tool for rewriting URLs in Java Servlets. It is similar to mod_rewrite

These are the major URL rewriting tools which is used widely.

Dynamic Websites Are Not Search Engine Friendly Websites

Dynamic websites are usually database driven websites where some parts of the content are generated by SSP(Server Side Programs) OR Middle Tier. The problem is many search engines find it very difficult in indexing dynamic websites, but there is always a solution for any problem.

Initially you need to understand why search engines are unable to read dynamically generated websites.

1. Dynamic webpages doesn’t exist on server physically.
2. They have complex URLs such as “ http://www.example.com?name=value&blabla%blabla@session_id@2226897&blabla=77″ . Special characters like “?”, “=”, “@”, “%”, “$”, “*”, “&”, “! are not understood by robots or spiders.
3. Search engines consider these dynamic website as group of never ending links.
4. Search engine crawlers will get stuck in an loop, specially if the dynamic website has session id’s.

Let Me Share Some Important Tips To Optimize A Dynamic Website For Better Rankings

In my last post, I had discussed about dynamic websites. So now I am going to give you some tips to optimize a dynamic website for better results.

1. First create a HTML sitemap with less than 100 text links in it. If the site has more than 100 links, then break the sitemap into two or more accordingly.
2. Start building inbound links to other pages of the website from other relevant websites such as directories etc.
3. With the help of URL re-writing techniques convert dynamic web pages into static web pages.
4. Use some plug-in that will change the existing dynamic URLs into static ones.
5. Must avoid using session IDs in the URL.
6. If you are including parameters, limit it to just two and limit the number of characters per parameter to less than ten.
