There are industry and professional associations for almost everything under the Sun. But some people think all they need to do in order to succeed in their business or profession is join such associations. Nowadays, there are even ‘business referral’ groups disguised as associations that come together every week… where members refer customers to each other.
Well… it’s understandable. Everyone likes referrals and groups because it provides a sense of belonging and for some people, security is in association. But, believing that’s all you need to do or the only thing that gets you success in your business, profession or career… is the worst thought to nurture.
If this were true, then every member of the business group or the association would be ultra successful. They would all be growing everyday, scaling up limitlessly, becoming millionaires and billionaires.
Well.. you know that’s not the fact or the reality. Referrals work only for certain businesses and in such groups… only a few top people, usually the founders or the promoters of the group are the ones that are always benefitted… at the expense of all other members, obviously. The ground reality is…. members are participating because they WANT referrals… so, everyone in the group is there to GET something.. but not just GIVE. Once they have enough referrals, they won’t be seen in the group again because they get busy serving their newly found customers.
If you continue to hold on to this misconception of believing in joining associations and referral groups to grow your business or profession, then be ready for a big disappointment, my friend. In fact, the more time you spend in referring clients or customers to other members in the groups or associations, the less time you are focusing on YOUR own business, profession or service… leading to dilution of efforts and lower performance. I am not against anyone joining associations. That’s good to have a collective voice in policy making and governance…. As a social service. But if that’s your ONLY big idea of growth, then you are in a worrisome situation.
On the other hand, the most successful individuals have always vouched for being unique and authentic. Being different and standing out from the rest of the crowd, has always gotten them the attention and trust they need to succeed.
So, let me ask you…… Do you want to keep thinking that you have to become a member of associations or referral groups to succeed… OR.. you want to focus your energy and resources on crafting your message to your people and reaching out to them in a big way.
