When people think about writing a book, one of the most common excuses they give is, “I don’t know HOW to write a book”. This is like approaching the problem from the wrong end.

It’s okay if you don’t know how to do something. You can always figure it out. The more important question, especially when it comes to writing a book is, to ask yourself, “WHY should I write a book?”

When you are clear about your “why”, then you will have clarity on “what” to do and then you can find out “how” to do that. When you have a strong reason why you must write a book, you will figure out the “how” anyways.

When I work with first-time authors, I don’t ask them about the topic of their book. That’s not the first step. The real process starts with understanding “why” experts, entrepreneurs, professionals or thought-leaders should consider writing their own book.

Some really good reasons or “why’s” for writing a book include, low influence, enhancing personal brand or identity, overcoming unfulfilled feeling, no recent breakthroughs, no community or fan-following, ineffective advertising or marketing, not enough leads, lack of trust or credibility or breaking free from a busy, tiring, mechanical life.

These are the common ones. There are other strong reasons as well. This is really the very first step when thinking about a book. Not the topic or the subject or even “how” to write a book.

If you start with “how to write a book”, which is the technique part, you may risk overwhelming yourself with too much learning with little or no results to show even after putting in a ton of effort.

You don’t have to learn how to write to express your thoughts. You must know why you want to do it, what to include, which is the ‘structure’ part, and for whom, the people you are trying to reach. When these steps are done, the “how” or the technique part will become clear automatically or you an always find help with this step.

Leadership is all about being a role model and offering hope & help to people. This is what I stand for.

Today, people like entrepreneurs, experts, and professionals… who are in leadership roles are failing because they are not really striving towards being a role model to their followers. Servant leadership and leadership by example… are the two most widely successful strategies that have helped create some of the world’s largest organisations in the world… and yet, some leaders are missing these big ideas in favour of shortcuts, positions, and certifications.

There’s nothing wrong with a shortcut, if it helps in increasing productivity… but trying to use it as a leadership strategy falls flat. Positions and titles, only give an initial head start… like for example… CEO, CFO, Managing Director… titles like this will put you in a leadership position… will get you the driver’s seat… but won’t help you gain followers, right? And, talking about various certifications, awards, associations… these are all are good in enhancing abilities but may not necessarily help other people.. especially your followers.

People want to follow you because they see you as their role model. You do things that THEY believe in. You demonstrate abilities that THEY value the most. In other words, they see or want to see all the qualities they lack in order to succeed,… in YOU. You want to be a role model for them. You want to offer them hope and help. You are their beacon to get them to their next level… and trust me… everyone, including you and me, irrespective of our present positions,…. We all have another level to rise up to, yes?

Just think about your own role models… people who have had a tremendous amount of influence…. on YOU? I bet all that positive influence can be attributed in some way to being a role model. The more common example is followers and fans of movie actors. They follow their star so closely… they dress like their star, they pickup their speaking style, they even adopt their star’s social causes. When James Bond wears a new Omega watch in a movie, the fans quickly start buying and wearing them as well… at 8000 dollars a piece, it’s not just about checking time… they feel a little bit of James Bond in themselves when to do it. They are following their role model.

So, being a role model is going to be the deciding factor for effective leadership. This is going to intensify even more during this decade. People will need role models in different areas of their life. This decade will belong to thought leaders who could be role models to their followers. The physical world is in chaos and the digital world is overwhelmed with information overload. There are too many things for people to do, already. That’s why they need you… to offer them hope and help… to lead them even more effectively… and be their role model.

Nobody is actually “given” the position of a leader. No one needs a special “permission” to show up as their best self. You can be a leader if you are willing to stake your claim and convey your key message to the people.

The change from being a follower to leading a following is not easy. It’s not about your experience or expertise. It’s about your willingness to stand up for your message. It’s about finding and fine-tuning your connection to the people you want to reach. But the society is still set up to force people to follow myths like “do what you like to do”… “join an association and gradually grow”… or even “climb the ladder one step at a time..” — very limiting but strong beliefs that have been hammered down for generations. How much of a better world could we have if people only did what they loved… without doing things that were necessary, even if they were difficult?

It all boils down to 3 words — desire, courage, message. Do you have the desire to become a leader? Do you have the courage to take a stand? Can you find your message to the world? If you have 100% of the first one, which is desire… and a little bit of the second trait, courage… you can easily get the rest and the third trait, messaging. Desire is in the future. It’s associated with your identity. Desires are usually expressed like “I want to…” Followed by the actual desire. It’s usually associated with your future self. Courage is a feeling. It’s not a skill or something you can get. It’s an emotion. It comes from the feeling that even if you don’t have all things figured out, you still believe that everything works out well. Everything will turn out to be good and you will make it.

The final piece of the puzzle — is getting clear on your messaging. That’s what I want to help you find. When you decide to lead, when you muster up courage to stand out for something, that’s your time to write a book that has your message to the world. It’s like announcing who you are and what you stand for… in a big way. Social media will not get you branding for free. Whatever you post won’t even reach a small fraction of your own connections or friends on your favourite social network.

Don’t worry. I understand how surprised you might be because everyone told you to post regularly on social media for personal branding.

Each and every social network out there started for free… but today, they offer you higher exposure only if you are willing to pay them… that’s why they have campaigns and paid ads. Why would they give you free publicity when they can easily charge for it?

So, what to do about it? When it comes to getting more eyeballs for your messages, posts, and social updates, uniqueness and high-value content becomes the most critical factors. If you are posting the same kind of images or sharing other peoples’ content, it’s not unique and neither it’s high value for your audience. If people have to respond, engage, like, and share your content, it has to be ‘useful’ for them. They should be able to understand your message and either agree or disagree with it, in order to evoke a response. For this to happen, you MUST have 2 other elements with your audience because people are busy.

If you want to do ANYTHING with anyone, you MUST have their attention and trust. Not just on social media… think about your business, profession, or even your family members. If you want your kid to listen to you, you must first get her attention and gain trust. Just yelling “DO YOUR HOMEWORK…” Or “STAY AWAY FROM THE SCREEN” won’t usually get the desired response, does it?

If you are in a leadership role then you already know… for personal branding, getting attention and trust is so basic but common-sense does not always prevail. Right now, you have a choice. You can continue to do what you are doing on social media, and risk putting in a ton of work with very little results… in fact, that’s what most people do, anyways. From Shining Floors… to creating Cheetos!

You probably never heard of Richard Montanez.

As the son of a Mexican immigrant who never made it past fourth grade, Richard lived with ten siblings in a one-room cinder block house in a migrant labor camp east of Los Angeles.

To help pitch in, the boy picked grapes with his entire family, including his grandfather.

He took other odd jobs such as washing cars, picking weeds and slaughtering chickens.

Eventually, Montañez landed a job as a janitor with Frito-Lay, the snack food giant.  He needed help filling out the application because he couldn’t read or write. 

For the next decade the young man was determined to become the best damn janitor Frito-Lay ever had. He operated under a single piece of advice from his grandfather: “Make sure that floor shines and let them know that a Montañez mopped it.”

One day, the CEO at Frito-Lay issued a video encouraging every employee to start behaving like an owner.

When one of the assembly line machines broke and some Cheetos were left bare of any cheese powder, Richard brought some home with him and decided to experiment.

With the help of his wife, he dusted them with the same sort of chili powder he had seen a street vendor use on a popular style of grilled corn known as elote.

After testing the flavor with his family, Montañez first pitched the idea to former PepsiCo CEO Roger Enrico over the phone and was given two weeks to prepare a presentation to the executive suite.

So Richard went to the library and checked out books about marketing and business strategies. He purchased his first-ever necktie for $3. He filled 100 plastic baggies with his concoction, sealed them with a clothing iron, and drew his own logo and design on every single package.

During the presentation an executive asked, “How much market share do you think you can get?”

Trying not to feel out of his depth, Richard replied by stretching his arms out and saying: “THIS much market share!”

The CEO had heard enough.

And now you know the story of the Flamin’ Hot Cheeto, a snack that would go on to become a multi-billion dollar asset for Frito-Lay.

Today, Montañez is the vice president of multicultural sales for PepsiCo America and has been called the Godfather of Multicultural Marketing.

So, whatever you do… do it with utmost honesty and devotion. It never fails!

Can you believe it? Lack of recognition tops the list of reasons why people quit jobs… I read it in a study by Gartner recently. Not money… not facilities… not even paid leaves…… The biggest factor was appreciation and recognition of efforts. That’s important to people.
But the problem is… all these ‘currencies’ of leadership… recognition, credibility…. Authority… all these have to be earned…. Which means, you have to DO something to earn it and just EXPECTING them won’t get any results.

Expecting someone to recognise your work, expecting others to believe you and your ideas, which is credibility….. Or expecting to become an AUTHORITY on your topic is NOT going to become a reality unless you make strategic actions that will result in gaining these beneficial attributes.

There are industry and professional associations for almost everything under the Sun. But some people think all they need to do in order to succeed in their business or profession is join such associations. Nowadays, there are even ‘business referral’ groups disguised as associations that come together every week… where members refer customers to each other.

Well… it’s understandable. Everyone likes referrals and groups because it provides a sense of belonging and for some people, security is in association. But, believing that’s all you need to do or the only thing that gets you success in your business, profession or career… is the worst thought to nurture.

If this were true, then every member of the business group or the association would be ultra successful. They would all be growing everyday, scaling up limitlessly, becoming millionaires and billionaires.

Well.. you know that’s not the fact or the reality. Referrals work only for certain businesses and in such groups… only a few top people, usually the founders or the promoters of the group are the ones that are always benefitted… at the expense of all other members, obviously. The ground reality is…. members are participating because they WANT referrals… so, everyone in the group is there to GET something.. but not just GIVE.
