____________

3 Big Ideas, Tips or Strategies for this week

1. Collaboration. Collaboration sets us up for commitment. Coercion results in compliance Commitment is better than compliance because it releases discretionary effort in people. For complex, cognitive, custom teamwork, discretionary effort is everything.

Source: Leadership is Language by David Marquet.

2. The Grateful Flow. Pick out things in your life you can be grateful for, like, “I’m grateful for my eyesight; I’m grateful I have hot water,” etc. Mention at least five so that your heart continues to generate gratefulness, this time without words. The energy you are now giving out is the Grateful Flow. As this energy emanates from your heart, your chest will soften and open. In this state you’ll feel yourself approaching an overwhelming presence, filled with the power of infinite giving. You’ve made a connection to the Source.

3. Authentic. The best way to come across as authentic as possible is by sharing your vulnerabilities. When you share your stories of challenge, pitfalls, or criticisms you have had, people perceive you as a normal human being — honest and transparent.

2 Stories, Quotes, or Case-Studies for this week

1. Delegation Dangers

The first rule of any technology used in a business is that automation applied to an efficient operation will magnify the efficiency. The second is that automation applied to an inefficient operation will magnify the inefficiency.

2. The “Wow” Balloon

Last spring I was walking in a park. A short distance ahead of me was a mom and her three-year-old daughter. The little girl was holding on to a string that was attached to a helium balloon.

All of a sudden, a sharp gust of wind took the balloon from the little girl. I braced myself for some screaming and crying.

But, no! As the little girl turned to watch her balloon go skyward, she gleefully shouted out, “Wow!”

I didn’t realize it at that moment, but that little girl taught me something.

Later that day, I received a phone call from a person with news of an unexpected problem. I felt like responding with, “Oh no, what should we do?” But remembering that little girl, I found myself saying, “Wow, that’s interesting! How can I help you?”

One thing’s for sure: Life’s always going to keep us off balance with its unexpected problems. That’s a given. What’s not preordained is our response. We can choose to be frustrated or fascinated.

No matter what the situation, a fascinated “Wow!” will always beat a frustrated “Oh, no.”

So the next time you experience one of life’s unexpected gusts, remember that little girl and make it a “Wow!” experience.

3 Big Ideas, Tips or Strategies for this week

1. Free Publicity. Ask the associations you belong to (or have membership) to feature you in an article or an interview. A powerful strategy that works really well. Most associations have newsletters and events and are always looking for contributions from its members.

2. Feel Do Be. Instead of Be (someone) → Do (task) → (so that you can) Have something (rat race)… try Feel (positive) → (so that you can) Do (tasks more effectively) → (that results in) Being who you want to become.

3. Vanishing Jobs. In the beginning, the jobs displaced by technology will be those that are dull, dangerous or dirty; eventually, it will include jobs like surgeons, anaesthesiologists or optometrists. What jobs will we lose first? Three that come to mind: Truck drivers, retail, and supermarket workers and cashiers. Why?… Because tech and automation can quickly replace these jobs.

2 Stories, Quotes, or Case-Studies for this week

1. In a mother’s womb were two babies…

One asked the other:

“Do you believe in life after delivery?” The other replied, “Why, of course. There has to be something after delivery. Maybe we are here to prepare ourselves for what we will be later.”

“Nonsense” said the first. “There is no life after delivery. What kind of life would that be?”

The second said, “I don’t know, but there will be more light than here. Maybe we will walk with our legs and eat from our mouths. Maybe we will have other senses that we can’t understand now.”

The first replied, “That is absurd. Walking is impossible. And eating with our mouths? Ridiculous! The umbilical cord supplies nutrition and everything we need. But the umbilical cord is so short. Life after delivery is to be logically excluded.”

The second insisted, “Well I think there is something and maybe it’s different than it is here. Maybe we won’t need this physical cord anymore.”

The first replied, “Nonsense. And moreover if there is life, then why has no one has ever come back from there? Delivery is the end of life, and in the after-delivery there is nothing but darkness and silence and oblivion. It takes us nowhere.”

“Well, I don’t know,” said the second, “but certainly we will meet Mother and she will take care of us.”

The first replied “Mother? You actually believe in Mother? That’s laughable. If Mother exists then where is She now?”

The second said, “She is all around us. We are surrounded by her. We are of Her. It is in Her that we live. Without Her this world would not and could not exist.”

Said the first: “Well I don’t see Her, so it is only logical that She doesn’t exist.”

To which the second replied, “Sometimes, when you’re in silence and you focus and you really listen, you can perceive Her presence, and you can hear Her loving voice, calling down from above.”

2. The Pac-Man Effect!

Mention‘s study of more than 1 billion small business mentions on social media revealed the extent to which customers interact with companies on social media. A small percentage of interactions—only 6 percent—are negative. The remaining 94 percent are positive or neutral, with neutral conversations—your average, every day, run-of-the-mill interactions—accounting for 76 percent of total mentions.

When plotted on a pie chart, these conversations look a bit like Pac-Man. Hence, the Pac-Man Effect. So, don’t worry… if you are just ‘consuming’ content on social networks, it’s time to being the ‘creator’ as well.

____________

3 Big Ideas, Tips or Strategies for this week

1. Networking Strategy. The most effective networking strategy I’ve found has nothing to do with conferences, cocktail hours, cold emails, or any of the common ideas you hear:

a) Do interesting things.
b) Share them publicly.

Repeat those two strategies and you’ll become a magnet. Like-minded people will come to you.

Source: Atomic Habits, James Clear

2. Show, Don’t Tell. People need to see something to believe in it, but more important, they need to see something to pull out their wallets. If it’s a campaign for a new product, then the prototype or rendering of your product has to be a prominent feature in the video. The easiest way to convey the value of your idea to a potential backer is to show people using it.

3. Build Buyers List. If you are an author, giveaway your book (for a small shipping & handling fee) to build a list of buyers. This list is worth its weight in gold. The people on that list know you, like you, and have made a small payment to get your book, which means they have shown some commitment towards to your message. A list of buyers is a thousand times more valuable than a list of freebie seekers.

2 Stories, Quotes, or Case-Studies for this week

1. Google’s Eight Innovation Principles

Google has eight innovation principles that govern their strategy, famously summarised in a 2011 article by Google senior vice president Susan Wojcicki.

  • 8 Principles:
    • Share Everything.
    • Look for Ideas Everywhere.
    • Think Big but Start Small.
    • Never Fail to Fail.
    • Spark with Imagination, Fuel with Data.
    • Be a Platform.
    • Have a Mission That Matters.

2. How to Stop a Shark?

During a research experiment, a marine biologist placed a shark into a large holding tank and then released several small bait fish into the tank.

As you would expect, the shark quickly swam around the tank, attacked and ate the smaller fish.

The marine biologist then inserted a strong piece of clear fibreglass into the tank, creating two separate partitions. She then put the shark on one side of the fibreglass and a new set of bait fish on the other.

Again, the shark quickly attacked.  This time, however, the shark slammed into the fibreglass divider and bounced off.

Undeterred, the shark kept repeating this behavior every few minutes to no avail.  Meanwhile, the bait fish swam around unharmed in the second partition.

Eventually, about an hour into the experiment, the shark gave up.

This experiment was repeated several dozen times over the next few weeks.

Each time, the shark got less aggressive and made fewer attempts to attack the bait fish, until eventually the shark got tired of hitting the fibreglass divider and simply stopped attacking altogether.

Here’s where it got interesting.

The marine biologist then removed the fibreglass divider …

… but the shark didn’t attack.

The shark had been trained to believe a barrier existed between it and the bait fish, so the bait fish swam wherever they wished, free from harm.

The success that comes from failure!

“Failure is not acceptable.”

How many times have you heard this at work? Maybe it’s your mantra. Or perhaps it’s the approach you’re currently applying as you work towards building your own online business.

“You’ve got to hustle to make money.”

The Finery Report recently did a survey that found:

  • 83.8% say working overtime to be a regular occurrence
  • 69.6% regularly work on weekends.
  • 60.8% feel guilty when they do not put in extra hours at work

This continuous stress can be harmful to both your mental and physical wellbeing.

Maybe you’re thinking, yes, but this is how I can be successful.

So let me ask you this. How far are you willing to go to avoid failure?

Think about how the world’s top athletes and the type of rigor and discipline they put themselves through. They train all their lives, pushing their bodies as far as they can physically go to win.

This “no surrender” hustle and grind mentality has given birth to slogans like:

  • “No one trains to get second place.”
  • “Just do it.”
  • “Do or die. There is no try.”

But at what cost?

Simone Biles’ decision to withdraw from parts of the Tokyo Olympics has shown us that there’s more to winning than a Gold medal. Instead of pushing herself beyond her limits, she decided there were more important things than avoiding failure.

“Embrace the power of non-attainment.” – Adam Kreek, Canadian Olympian

Adam speaks about the happiness you can find in failure when working towards a goal.

During the 2004 Olympics, he was part of the heavily favored Canadian rowing team. They got 5th place. But when asked if they were disappointed in the results, they answered no—the experience they had as a team was amazing.

Why is his story important to you?

Well, in your quest to build a successful business, there will be many instances where you’ll fail. You can continue to push yourself to the very brink of attaining success. Or you can celebrate those instances and experience the happiness that comes with the journey.

Take stock of all the milestones you’ve made that wouldn’t have been possible if you simply focused on a win-all or nothing approach.

Isn’t that a healthier way to look at things?

3 Big Ideas, Tips or Strategies for this week

1. Collect Testimonials. Get written or video testimonials for everything you do. This is an important tool that provides social proof for your prospects. Ask for recommendations on LinkedIn. Most people will gladly agree.

2. To live through an impossible situation, you don’t need to have the reflexes of a Grand Prix driver, the muscles of a Hercules, or the mind of an Einstein. You simply need to know what to do.”

Source: Anthony Greenback, The Book of Survival

3. True Breakthroughs = Crazy Ideas + Passion. Initially, the most successful ideas come across as crazy or impossible. Add passion to it and it becomes an obsession. Add strategy, resources, execution and patience, it becomes a breakthrough!

2 Stories, Quotes, or Case-Studies for this week

1. XPrize Origin – by Peter Diamandis

I first read Charles Lindbergh’s book, Spirit of St. Louis, in December 1993. I learned that Lindbergh flew from New York to Paris in 1927 to win a $25,000 prize.

It was that leverage and efficiency of an incentive prize that led me to propose the idea of a $10 million purse for the first person to build and fly a reusable private spaceship carrying three people into space on two flights within two weeks.

In May of 1996, without the prize money in hand, I went onstage under the St. Louis Arch and announced the $10 million XPRIZE anyway.

I thought (mistakenly) that someone would quickly fund the $10 million prize purse. After all, you didn’t pay out the prize money until after a team had successfully completed both flights.

Between 1996 and 2001, I pitched 150+ sponsors, and received 150 “no’s”.

Finally (long story) in 2002, I met the Ansari family, who ultimately funded the $10 million purse (we named it the Ansari XPRIZE in their honor).

Two years later on October 4, 2004, the XPRIZE was won.

It took 12 years, from concept to Prize Award…

Once again, this was a tale about grit, persistence and making my own luck.

Today, as the XPRIZE Foundation is hitting its stride, the Foundation is now 24 years old with over $300 million in awarded, funded and/or designed XPRIZEs.

2. Vanilla Ice Cream that puzzled General Motors!

A complaint was received by the Pontiac Division of General Motors:

‘This is the second time I have written to you, and I don’t blame you for not answering me, because I sounded crazy, but it is a fact that we have a tradition in our family of Ice-Cream for dessert after dinner each night, but the kind of ice cream varies so, every night, after we’ve eaten, the whole family votes on which kind of ice cream we should have and I drive down to the store to get it. It’s also a fact that I recently purchased a new Pontiac and since then my trips to the store have created a problem…..

You see, every time I buy a vanilla ice-cream, when I start back from the store my car won’t start. If I get any other kind of ice cream, the car starts just fine. I want you to know I’m serious about this question, no matter how silly it sounds “What is there about a Pontiac that makes it not start when I get vanilla ice cream, and easy to start whenever I get any other kind?” The Pontiac President was understandably skeptical about the letter, but sent an Engineer to check it out anyway.

The latter was surprised to be greeted by a successful, obviously well educated man in a fine neighbourhood. He had arranged to meet the man just after dinner time, so the two hopped into the car and drove to the ice cream store. It was vanilla ice cream that night and, sure enough, after they came back to the car, it wouldn’t start.

The Engineer returned for three more nights. The first night, they got

chocolate. The car started. The second night, he got strawberry. The car started. The third night he ordered vanilla. The car failed to start.

Now the engineer, being a logical man, refused to believe that this man’s car was allergic to vanilla ice cream. He arranged, therefore, to continue his visits for as long as it took to solve the problem. And toward this end he began to take notes: He jotted down all sorts of data: time of day, type of gas uses, time to drive back and forth etc.

In a short time, he had a clue: the man took less time to buy vanilla than any other flavor. Why? The answer was in the layout of the store. Vanilla, being the most popular flavor, was in a separate case at the front of the store for quick pickup. All the other flavors were kept in the back of the store at a different counter where it took considerably longer to check out the flavor.

Now, the question for the Engineer was why the car wouldn’t start when it took less time. Eureka – Time was now the problem – not the vanilla ice cream!!!!  The engineer quickly came up with the answer: “vapor lock”.

It was happening every night; but the extra time taken to get the other flavors allowed the engine to cool down sufficiently to start. When the man got vanilla, the engine was still too hot for the vapor lock to dissipate.

Even crazy looking problems are sometimes real and all problems seem to be simple only when we find the solution, with cool thinking.

Don’t just say “problem is at the other end or it is  IMPOSSIBLE” without putting a sincere effort….

What really matters is your attitude and your perception.

Moral of the Story “Try to Fix the Bug instead of making it as a Known Issue.”

____________

3 Big Ideas, Tips or Strategies for this week

1.

Easy Social Content. Struggling with ideas on what to share on social media? Instead of posting some useless forwards or “news”, make a list of 20 questions that people are asking you (or other experts online) and share your answers in each post. You can also convert each answer to a video. People will love you for this.

2.

Big or Small. “When making plans, think big. When making progress, think small.”

Source: Atomic Habits by James Clear

3.

Guarantee. I don’t love the use of guarantees when it comes to a Thought Leaders practice. If I were a watchmaker, I could guarantee the watch you buy from me is waterproof. It’s a stamp of quality for a product. If it turns out not to be so, I would fix it or replace it. The guarantee is a warranty on my tangible workmanship. Apple gives you the choice to buy Apple Care, their insurance product, or not. In that way, their guarantee is really an additional product they sell. Gotta love/hate Apple, right?

____________

1. Winning Against All Odds

Born in a village called Mokhra, near Rohtak, in Haryana, Sakshi and her family had to fight against all odds when she took up wrestling at just 11-years-old.

Coach Ishwar Singh Dahiya still remembers the day when a young Sakshi accompanied her mother to the Sir Chotu Ram Stadium Wrestling Academy in Rohtak. She had to train with the boys and fight them in the akhara, in a region where the sport was ‘not for girls’.

“She has given befitting reply to people who say that women cannot be wrestlers,” her mother said. “Meri 12 saal ki tapasya safal hui (My 12 years’ of hard work have borne fruit),” a beaming Sakshi told the flashing cameras right after her win at the Olympics. Sakshi earned the dramatic win after falling behind 0-5 following the first period in the do-or-die bout. The Indian turned the tables on the Kyrgyzstan wrestler in the dying seconds of the bout as Tynybekova was in complete command inmost part of the clash..

2. Law of Inertia

The law of inertia holds that a body at rest tends to remain at rest and a body in motion tends to remain in motion, at the same speed and in the same direction, unless acted upon by an outside force. With one major difference, that law  applies very well to the pattern of our lives.

People who are successful tend to remain successful.

People who are happy tend to remain happy.

People who are respected tend to remain respected.

People who reach their goals tend to go on reaching their goals.

So what’s the major difference ?

In physics, inertia is controlled by outside forces, but the real changes in the directions of our lives come from inside us. As William James said, “The gretest discovery of my generation is that a person can alter his life by altering his attitude of mind.”

You can live every day of life. You can be alive to the tips of your fingers. You can accomplish virtually any worthwhile goal you set for yourself.

3 Big Ideas, Tips or Strategies for this week

1.

And Then Some. Napoleon Hill always made sure his audiences knew the principle of going the extra mile. If you promise something, make sure that your customer gets exactly what you promised and then some. Remember the phrase: “…and then some!

2.

Over-the-top Confidence. For an example of over-the-top confidence, look at Mad Money’s Jim Cramer (CNBC). Like any financial advisor, he has a mixed record of accuracy in his forecasts for markets and individual stocks. Nevertheless, he has his own television show and a huge following.

A big key to Cramer’s success in building an audience is his confidence and appearance of expertise. When a phone call comes in with a question about a relatively obscure company, Cramer reels off the ticker symbol, gives a quick synopsis of what the company does and why he likes or doesn’t like it, and gives a firm buy or sell recommendation (complete with sound effects and flashing lights). No waffling, no alternative scenarios, no neutral “hold” recommendations—just a quick demonstration of deep knowledge and a firm, unambiguous opinion. That’s confidence, and it works for Cramer.

3.

Leadership Strategy. Find out and write down the answer to the question “What is your message to the world?” – then you will have everything you need to write a book, shoot a video, deliver a presentation, speak on stages or start a movement. Messaging is the key.

____________

1. The Shortest Story

One day Ernest Hemingway was having lunch with friends and they were talking about the importance of writing with brevity.

Hemingway bet everyone at the table ten dollars each that he could craft an entire story in six words.

After the pot was assembled, Hemingway took a napkin and wrote down the following six words:

“For sale: baby shoes, never worn.”

Everyone paid up without saying a word.

2. Judo Lessons

A 9-year-old boy who had lost his right arm in a car accident, decided to take judo lessons. His teacher was an old Japanese judo master who decided to teach the kid one move only.

After a few lessons the boy said to him “Master, shouldn’t I be learning more moves?” “No. This only move you know is the only move you’ll ever need to know,” he replied.

Six months later, the boy had his first tournament. To everyone’s surprise, the boy won the first three matches and got in the finals. The other boy, his opponent, was bigger and stronger than him. Everyone thought that the boy had no chance to win.

The match begun and the opponent, indeed seemed much more experienced than the little boy. Suddenly the opponent dropped his guard, which was a critical mistake. The boy used the only move he knew to pin him and won the tournament.

Later, the Master told the boy: “Son, you won for two reasons,” the Master answered, “First, after six months’ hard practice you have almost mastered one of the most difficult throws. And second, the only known defence for that move is for your opponent to grab your right arm.”

And this is how the boy’s biggest weakness turned into his biggest strength!

3 Big Ideas, Tips or Strategies for this week

1.

Fuzzy Ideas. When you’re creating something big (like writing a book) you might have a lot of ideas floating around that feel like fuzzy, complicated and confusing. The 6-Word Formula. Not getting replies to your email? Are people ignoring your message or keeping them pending for a long time without reverting back? Problem Solving Strategy. If you’re stuck, shift up a level or two (think bigger picture) or down a level or two (think finer details). Many problems are solvable at a different level. This works for strategy too. You’ll often find a better opportunity at a different level. Source: Atomic Habits.

2 Stories, Quotes, or Case-Studies for this week

1. Every Entrepreneur Should Do This

“Every entrepreneur should write a book, because having a book is the new business card. If you want to stand out, you need to show your expertise. Publishing a book is not just putting your thoughts on a blog post. It’s an event. It shows your best curated thoughts and it shows customers, clients, investors, friends and lovers what the most important things on your mind are right now.”“

2. Cinnamon Sense

There is ample evidence that cinnamon can reduce the glycemic index of a meal by up to 29%. Adding three to four grams of cinnamon (about a teaspoon) to one of your daily meals can not only lower blood glucose but also lower LDL cholesterol and triglycerides. The Saigon (Vietnamese) cinnamon is the best, followed by Cassia (common variety) and Ceylon cinnamon.

Perfection is a Leader’s worst enemy.

Transcript:

I have to create a perfect book in order to publish it. This is one of the most heard sentences I have heard as a publishing coach. Many leaders believe that their book has to be “perfect” in all ways if they want to publish it, although the definition of that ‘perfection’ is not clear.

Well… I understand if you are thinking that people may judge you if you publish a mediocre book. That’s completely valid.

But, this argument or… “excuse” has clipped the wings of many peoples’ dreams of becoming a published author. They go behind ‘perfection’ and it never gets done.

Think about it…. Is the world perfect? Is anyone actually perfect? Is there anything that can be called a perfect relationship, a perfect product, or even a perfect person? Although we all want to be ‘perfect’ in everything we do, it’s rarely a reality.

In fact, it’s the imperfections that makes us strive and improve each and every day. We learn, we try, we fail, and we improve and try again.

So instead of focusing on putting together a ‘perfect’ book, or waiting for a ‘perfect’ time, isn’t it more fulfilling to create something first and then improve it until you are satisfied? Isn’t this a more growth-oriented approach?

Well… the most valued organizations in the world do this all the time. For example, Microsoft… did they wait for the ‘perfect’ software to launch or did they launch a ‘good’ software and then made continuous improvements? Do you remember the first version of Microsoft Windows or the MS-Word software? I am sure you will be surprised to see the difference. And still, they are improving and releasing new versions.

If you are a perfectionist, then you will never be able to write a book. You can continue to wait for the perfect opportunity, the perfect time, or the perfect topic to begin writing your book OR you can get started by collaborating with key resources that can help you achieve your dream.

As a first step, schedule a free consultation with one of our highly trained publishing advisors and discuss. Maybe you will find something interesting or fulfilling to pursue. You can also figure out whether writing a book is the right choice for you or not and what kind of help and support you may need to accomplish this.
