Live Limitless: Sell Anything Framework, Influencer, Justification, Risks & Worth!

read on LIFELETTER.RAAMANAND.COM   |   NOVEMBER 19, 2022

____________

3 Big Ideas, Tips or Strategies for this week

1. Sell Anything

If you want to sell anything, especially online, there are only three things you need to do consistently — show up, add value, sell. You can substitute your own way of adding value, like, teaching, coaching, training, demonstration etc.

2. Influencer

Gaining positive influence in your chosen field is not instant or something that can happen overnight. It’s a gradual process and you must start as early as possible. More than intensity, it’s consistency that builds influence.

3. System Justification

To avoid mistakes, we avoid irreversible decisions. If we must choose, we tend to choose the option that is perceived as the least risky or that preserves the status quo. Better the devil you know than the devil you do not.

_____________

2 Stories, Quotes, or Case-Studies for this week

1. Risks

Chris Hadfield once said, “Almost everything worthwhile carries with it some sort of risk, whether it’s starting a new business, whether it’s leaving home, whether it’s getting married, or whether it’s flying into space.”

True, but not all risks are created equally. Going into space feels like a bigger risk than starting a company. That puts things in perspective, though, and acknowledges the fact that nothing is without risk, therefore, don’t try to completely bubble-wrap your enterprise. Play it safe, of course, but not to the point of inertia.

2. Worth

“A shop owner placed a sign above his door that said: ‘Puppies For Sale.’

Signs like this always have a way of attracting young children, and to no surprise, a boy saw the sign and approached the owner; ‘How much are you going to sell the puppies for?’ he asked.

The store owner replied, ‘Anywhere from $30 to $50.’

The little boy pulled out some change from his pocket. ‘I have $2.37,’ he said. ‘Can I please look at them?’

The shop owner smiled and whistled. Out of the kennel came Lady, who ran down the aisle of his shop followed by five teeny, tiny balls of fur.

One puppy was lagging considerably behind. Immediately the little boy singled out the lagging, limping puppy and said, ‘What’s wrong with that little dog?’

The shop owner explained that the veterinarian had examined the little puppy and had discovered it didn’t have a hip socket. It would always limp. It would always be lame.

The little boy became excited. ‘That is the puppy that I want to buy.’

The shop owner said, ‘No, you don’t want to buy that little dog. If you really want him, I’ll just give him to you.’

The little boy got quite upset. He looked straight into the store owner’s eyes, pointing his finger, and said;

‘I don’t want you to give him to me. That little dog is worth every bit as much as all the other dogs and I’ll pay full price. In fact, I’ll give you $2.37 now, and 50 cents a month until I have him paid for.’

The shop owner countered, ‘You really don’t want to buy this little dog. He is never going to be able to run and jump and play with you like the other puppies.’

To his surprise, the little boy reached down and rolled up his pant leg to reveal a badly twisted, crippled left leg supported by a big metal brace. He looked up at the shop owner and softly replied, ‘Well, I don’t run so well myself, and the little puppy will need someone who understands!’”

____________

3 Big Ideas, Tips or Strategies for this week

1. Will Power

Will power has a limited battery life and needs recharge, making each act that needs will power become a win-lose situation. Next time, try ‘why-power’. It’s powerful, strong, and doesn’t need recharging.

2. Success Path

Success comes down to being appropriate in the moments of your life. If you feel you are the right place, doing the right thing, then you are on the path of success.

3. Hyperbolic Discounting

A cognitive bias, where people choose smaller, immediate rewards rather than larger, later rewards. The discounted present value of the future reward follows a mathematical curve called a “hyperbola.”

2 Stories, Quotes, or Case-Studies for this week

1. The Obstacle on the Roadway

Once the mayor of a small village had a boulder placed in the middle of the roadway. Then, he hid himself behind a tree and watched the villagers passing by. He wanted to see if any of them would attempt to remove the big rock. But no one seemed to care about it.  Even some members of the council came by and simply walked around the rock. Some villagers loudly blamed the mayor for not keeping the roads clear, however none did anything to get the rock out of the way. Then, an old peasant came along, carrying a load of vegetables. When the peasant approached the rock, he laid down his burden and tried to move it to the side. He struggled for a while, and he finally succeeded. Afterwards he picked up his vegetables, and was about to continue his way, when he noticed a purse lying on the ground, where the boulder had been placed. He opened the purse and found inside several gold coins and a note from the mayor reading that the gold was for the person who removed the boulder.  Every obstacle presents an opportunity to improve our condition!

2. Embracing Diversity

Pablo Picasso was travelling through Spain on a train. Once his seatmate discovered who he was sitting opposite, he started to rant about the failings of modern art. He talked about how he despised Picasso’s paintings because they didn’t look ‘real’, that his work was a false representation of images in the world. Picasso listened quietly. The man finally pulled a small snapshot out of his wallet and said, “Here is a picture of my wife, this is what she really looks like.” Picasso took the snapshot from the man, held it sideways, and peered at it for a long time. Finally he remarked, “Well, she is awfully small…..and flat.”

____________

3 Big Ideas, Tips or Strategies for this week

  1. Simplifiers

Leadership don’t need degrees. Leading a team, project, or even a nation often involves cutting through complex stuff, simplifying ideas and eliminating doubt in the minds of people.

  1. Raise your hand

Milton Berle said “If opportunity doesn’t knock, build a door”. If you feel there are not many opportunities showing up, then probably you are not raising your hand enough.

  1. Lesson learned

A wise man cracked a joke. People laughed like crazy. After a moment, he cracked the same joke again. This time, fewer people laughed. He cracked the same joke once more and nobody laughed. He smiled and said, “You can’t laugh at the same joke again and again, but why do you keep crying over the same thing over and over?”.

2 Stories, Quotes, or Case-Studies for this week

  1. Student essay

A school teacher was once correcting the essays of her student. As she went through one essay, tears ran down her cheek. Her husband, having noticed her crying asked what the matter was. To this, she handed him the essay her student had written. In the essay, the kid wished to become a TV so that he could gain the love and attention of his parents. He elaborated on how his mother watched the TV to be happy and how his father watched it with relief after coming home from work. The child expressed his wish to be a TV so that he could be the center of attraction and receive love from his parents. On reading the essay, the teacher’s husband said, “What a poor kid! Such horrible parents!” To this, the wife looked up at him and said, “That essay is written by our kid!”

  1. Triple filter test

In ancient Greece, Socrates was reputed to hold knowledge in high esteem. One day an acquaintance met the great philosopher and said, “Do you know what I just heard about your friend?”

“Hold on a minute,” Socrates replied. “Before you talk to me about my friend, it might be good idea to take a moment and filter what you’re going to say. That’s why I call it the triple filter test. The first filter is Truth. Have you made absolutely sure that what you are about to tell me is true?”

“Well, no,” the man said, “actually I just heard about it and…”

“All right,” said Socrates. “So you don’t really know if it’s true or not. Now, let’s try the second filter, the filter of Goodness. Is what you are about to tell me about my friend something good?”

“Umm, no, on the contrary…”

“So,” Socrates continued, “you want to tell me something bad about my friend, but you’re not certain it’s true. You may still pass the test though, because there’s one filter left—the filter of Usefulness. Is what you want to tell me about my friend going to be useful to me?”

“No, not really.”

“Well,” concluded Socrates, “if what you want to tell me is neither true, nor good, nor even useful, why tell it to me at all?”

1 Critical Question to Ask Yourself

When faced with a conflict, most people have one of these two positions: “that bad person” and “poor me”. What if you could ask yourself, “What shall I do next?”

____________

3 Big Ideas, Tips or Strategies for this week

1. Six leadership styles

Research found that six distinctive leadership styles and when to use the right style to have the greatest positive impact.

  • Coercive leaders demand immediate compliance.
  • Authoritative leaders mobilise people towards a vision.
  • Affiliative leaders create emotional bonds and harmony.
  • Democratic leaders build consensus through participation.
  • Pace-setting leaders expect excellence and self-direction.
  • Coaching leaders develop people for the future.

2. One minute wonder

When was the last time you saw someone who had to reassert control over a situation? Perhaps it was your boss, or a manager of another team? How well did they do it? Did they rise to meet the situation or back away? Did they take responsibility or hide from it? Did they keep cool or bite anyone’s head off who questioned them? There’s a lot to be learned from how others have dealt with tough situations.

3. Response-ability

When things go wrong in your team what happens? Do people look for someone to blame? Blaming others is a waste of everyone’s time. It also means you lack ‘response-ability’. The ability to take ownership and select the right response in a situation.

2 Stories, Quotes, or Case-Studies for this week

1. Shake off your problems

A man’s favourite donkey falls into a deep precipice. He can’t pull it out no matter how hard he tries. He therefore decides to bury it alive.

Soil is poured onto the donkey from above. The donkey feels the load, shakes it off, and steps on it. More soil is poured.

It shakes it off and steps up. The more the load was poured, the higher it rose. By noon, the donkey was grazing in green pastures.

After much shaking off (of problems) And stepping up (learning from them), One will graze in GREEN PASTURES.

2. On God’s time

A man walked to the top of a hill to talk to God.

The man asked, “God, what’s a million years to you?” and God said, “A minute.”

Then the man asked, “Well, what’s a million dollars to you?” and God said, “A penny.”

Then the man asked, “God…..can I have a penny?” and God said, “Sure…..in a minute.”

____________

3 Big Ideas, Tips or Strategies for this week

1. What to do!?

Stella Grizont once said that “a big mistake that I see people doing is trying to figure out ‘what do I do next?’ And I think the better question to ask is, ‘How do I want to be?’ Typically people will find that there are actually multiple possibilities they haven’t explored yet because they haven’t asked the right questions.”

2. Early struggles

Major life changes—moving to a new city, starting a new job, ending a relationship, getting married, having kids, etc.—will often make life harder for the first 100 days before improving. This is not always true, but it’s a nice reminder that experiencing early struggle doesn’t mean it was a bad choice.

Source: James Clear, Atomic Habits

3. Back to basics

Basic arithmetic and numeracy are way more important in life than doing calculus. Similarly, being able to convey yourself simply using ordinary words is far more important than being able to write poetry, having an extensive vocabulary, or speaking seven different foreign languages.

_____________

2 Stories, Quotes, or Case-Studies for this week

1. The world stinks!

One Sunday afternoon, a cranky grandfather was visiting his family. As he lay down to take a nap, his grandson decided to have a little fun by putting Limburger cheese on Grandfather’s moustache. Soon, grandpa awoke with a snort and charged out of the bedroom saying, “This room stinks.” Through the house he went, finding every room smelling the same. Desperately he made his way outside only to find that “The whole world stinks!”

So it is when we fill our minds with negativism. Everything we experience and everybody we encounter will carry the scent we hold in our mind.

2. The perfect girl

A friend asked a gentleman how it is that he never married ?

Replied the gentleman, “Well, I guess I just never met the right woman. I guess I’ve been looking for the perfect girl.”

“Oh, come on now,” said the friend, “Surely you have met at least on girl that you wanted to marry.”

“Yes, there was one girl once. I guess she was the one perfect girl the only perfect girl I really ever met. She was just the right everything I really mean that she was the perfect girl for me.”

“Well, why didn’t you marry her,” asked the friend.

“She was looking for the perfect man,” he said.

Live Limitless: Google Effect, Maslow’s Hammer and Why we buy insurance!

read on LIFELETTER.RAAMANAND.COM   |   SEPTEMBER 17, 2022

____________

3 Big Ideas, Tips or Strategies for this week

1. Google Effect

The Google effect, also known as digital amnesia, is the tendency to forget information that is readily available through search engines like Google. We do not commit this information to our memory because we know that this information is easy to access online.

2. Why we use same skills everywhere?

According to the law of the instrument, when we acquire a new skill, we tend to see opportunities to use it everywhere. This bias is also known as “the law of the hammer”, “the golden hammer”, or “Maslow’s hammer”, in reference to psychologist Abraham Maslow’s famous quote: “I suppose it is tempting, if the only tool you have is a hammer, to treat everything as if it were a nail”.

3. Why do we buy insurance?

Loss aversion is a cognitive bias that describes why, for individuals, the pain of losing is psychologically twice as powerful as the pleasure of gaining. The loss felt from money, or any other valuable object, can feel worse than gaining that same thing.1 Loss aversion refers to an individual’s tendency to prefer avoiding losses to acquiring equivalent gains. Simply put, it’s better not to lose $20, than to find $20.

_____________

2 Stories, Quotes, or Case-Studies for this week

1. Reaching an Audience

You don’t reach your audience. You reach the people, one at a time.

If an audience responds to you, it’s because almost every person in the audience does individually. Each responds because you reached each one directly, and specifically.

You reach each member the way you reach any person: you look that person int he eyes. Your eyes tell them who you are, and you re what you are selling. Talk to on, not many, from your eyes to theirs.

Source: You, Inc.

2. Big difference

Just from being marginally better, like running a quarter mile a fraction of a second faster, some people get paid a lot more — orders of magnitude more. Leverage magnifies those difference even more. Being at the extreme in your art is very important in the age of leverage.

____________

3 Big Ideas, Tips or Strategies for this week

1. Three Options

You always have three options: you can change it, you can accept it, or you can leave it. What is not a good option is to sit around wishing you would change it but not changing it, wishing you could leave it but not leaving it and not accepting it.

2. Other Meditations

Meditation is turning off society and listening to yourself. It only works when done for its own sake. Hiking is walking meditation. Journaling is writing meditation. Praying is gratitude meditation. Sitting quietly is direct meditation.

3. Mastering Welcome

Master your welcome: the way you greet others, the way you answer your phone. Check your email auto-response, too, because it frequently acts as your greeter. Does it sound welcoming, too?

_____________

2 Stories, Quotes, or Case-Studies for this week

1. Read Aloud

Read everything you write aloud. Your ear will pick up the mistakes that your eyes missed. Your ear will read the document the way your recipient hears it, too. If you proofread only with your eyes, your eyes will deceive you because they know what you said. They will tend to see what you think you write, rather than the actual words on the paper.

When you read aloud, you hear the mistakes. Your ears, being musical, also hear awkward rhythms. Smooth those out and your copy will flow for the reader. The reader will read more easily, enjoy the ride, and appreciate the person who provided it.

2. Thanks

Three in four executives consider applicants’ think-you notes in making hiring decisions. Apparently, most people do not realise this. Only one in three applicants thinks to send a thank-you note. This suggests again the wisdom of simply showing up. It appears that two in three people do not.

Say thank you. You won’t be alone, but you still will stand out.

_____________

1 Critical Question to Ask Yourself

Master your welcome and goodbye routines.

1. Your Biggest Fan

Take a few moments and think about your biggest fan. Now, go ahead and thank them for their attention.

2. Fire Walkers

If you are trying to do something extraordinary then find others who have done it before you. Seek out those ‘fire walkers’ and ask them how they did it and what advice they have for you. You will be surprised at the answers.

3. Ikigai

Find your Ikigai or your true essence by answering these four questions:

a. What do I love doing?

b. What am I good at?

c. What can I be paid for?

d. What does the world need?

The answer at the intersection of these four questions is your Ikigai.

2 Stories, Quotes, or Case-Studies for this week

1. The Jewels

Once there was a very rich and greedy man. He loved and hoarded jewels.

One day a visitor asked to see them.

So the jewels were brought out, amid much expensive security, and the two men gazed at the wonderful stones.

As the visitor was leaving he said, “Thank you for sharing your jewels with me.”

“I didn’t give them to you,” exclaimed the rich man, “They belong to me.”

“Yes of course,” replied the visitor, “And while we enjoyed the jewels just the same, the real difference between us is your trouble and expense of buying and protecting them.”

(Thanks Jackie Carpenter, adapted from an original item in New Internationalist 137.)

2. Direct Mail Campaign

This is a true story. Some years ago a client engaged a consultant to help with a small postal mailing to the purchasing departments of blue chip corporations. The consultant sourced the list (which was provided on MSExcel) and drafted the letter. Thereafter the client was keen to take control of the project, ie., to run the mail-merge and the fulfilment (basically printing, envelope-stuffing and mailing).

The consultant discovered some weeks later that a junior member of the client’s marketing department had sorted the list (changed the order of the listed organisations in the spreadsheet), but had sorted the company name column only, instead of all columns, with the result that every letter (about 500) was addressed and sent to a blue chip corporation at another entirely different corporation’s address.

Interestingly the mailing produced a particularly high response, which when investigated seemed to stem from the fact that an unusually high percentage of letters were opened and read, due apparently to the irresistible temptation of reading another corporation’s mail.

2. Simple Heuristic

If you’re evenly split on a difficult decision, take the path more painful in the short term.

2 Stories, Quotes, or Case-Studies for this week

1. Living is selling

Your childhood sales career prepared you for adulthood, when you tried to sell your college on admitting you, an employer on hiring you, and the car dealer on dropping $500 from the sticker price. You sell your friend on going to your favourite restaurant. A husband and wife sell constantly: what movie shall we go to? Who takes the dog to the vet? Who’s going to get the groceries? And on and on. The question is not, are you a salesperson? The question is, how might you become more effective?

Source: You, Inc.

2. The Higher Force

You can’t overcome the tendency to quit by thinking about it. You need a higher force. We call that force willpower. It’s the one higher force you must create yourself; all the universe can do is provide a challenge that demands you generate it.

3 Big Ideas, Tips or Strategies for this week

1. Relevancy

The biggest threat to most people in almost all industries and geographies is “losing their relevancy”. Becoming irrelevant is not new. But the alarming thing is that the time required is now compressed. What used to take a lifetime is now happening in a decade. Stay relevant.

2. Photoshop Alternative

If working on Photoshop for creating your daily images and social media posts is difficult, try using Canva. It’s easier and free!

3. Acceptance

Everyone in your life is imperfect, either because of something they’ve done in the past or something they can’t change in the present. Fixating on these things destroys relationships. You need a tool that allows you to accept people despite their flaws. Try accepting people as they are, forgiving their imperfections, and forgetting their flaws.

2 Stories, Quotes, or Case-Studies for this week

1. Showing Up

You emerge from school convinced that mastering your craft will bring you success. It certainly can. But the history of business is filled with stories of those who soared at their best but could not maintain that height consistently.

Do the big stuff, but master the small. People look at the small as telling evidence of your ability to do the big – and anything else.

Above all, perform consistently and reliably. Ninety percent of success, it turns out, really is showing up!

2. Thinking Clearly

Imagine we’re going through something difficult like a breakup, a job loss, a business failure, or a health problem, and our friends are advising us. When we are advising them, the answer is obvious. It comes to us in a minute, and we tell them exactly how to solve the problem.

You know the correct answer but your friend can’t see it, because they are in a moment of suffering and pain. They are wishing reality was different. The problem isn’t reality. The problem is – their desire is colliding with reality and preventing them from seeing the truth, no matter how much you say it.
