3 Big Ideas, Tips or Strategies for this week

1. Key Resource – You don’t need to be a great graphic artist to create your social media posts, backgrounds, and other graphical content because you can use an online tool called CANVA that comes with templates for pretty much everything you need to display your content in images, pictures, and icons. It’s super-easy and has tons of examples for each and every category imaginable. In fact, the cover graphic for this newsletter is prepared using Canva! Try it.

2. Big Changes – “Breakthroughs happen in your life because of two things. Either something comes to you (like winning a lottery, marrying a rich spouse) OR something comes from within you (like your work, content, teachings, training, coaching, etc.)”.

Source: Brendon Burchard

3. First 100 Days – Major life changes like moving to a new city, starting a new job, ending a relationship, getting married, having kids, etc – will often make life harder for the first 100 days before improving. This is not always true, but it’s a nice reminder that experiencing early struggle doesn’t mean it was a bad choice.

2 Stories, Quotes, or Case-Studies for this week

1. The Real Truth.

”There comes a time in when we resolve to speak the truth but we fail to utter the truth as fear engulfs us. Speaking about an incident or occurrence or speaking about one’s own mistakes-is it speaking the truth? No, it’s mere retelling it. Meaning, just narrating an occurrence. But, sometimes even when retelling we feel fear. A concern for others arises in our heart. Even the fear of causing sorrow to someone, stops the words from flowing out. Then, what is the real truth? Have we ever thought about it?

While being fearful, if someone speaks the facts, then, that is the truth. In reality, the truth is nothing but another name for fearlessness. And there’s no specific time to be fearless, because fearlessness is the nature of the soul. In other words, isn’t every moment the right time to be fearless and speak the truth? Think about it.”

Source: Krishna, The Mahabharata

2. The Law of the Garbage Truck!

One day I hopped in a taxi and we took off for the airport. We were driving along when suddenly a black car jumped out of a parking space right in front of us.

My taxi driver slammed on his brakes, skidded, and missed the other car by just inches! The driver of the other car whipped his head around and started yelling at us. My taxi driver just smiled and waved at the guy. And I mean he was really friendly.

So I asked, ‘Why did you just do that? This guy almost ruined your car and sent us to the hospital!’ This is when my taxi driver taught me what I now call, ‘The Law of the Garbage Truck.’

He explained that many people are like garbage trucks. They run around full of garbage, full of frustration, full of anger, and full of disappointment. As their garbage piles up, they need a place to dump it and sometimes they’ll dump it on you. Don’t take it personally. Just smile, wave, wish them well, and move on. Don’t take their garbage and spread it to other people at work, at home, or on the streets.

The bottom line is that successful people do not let garbage trucks take over their day. Life’s too short to wake up in the morning with regrets, resentments, anger, and frustration.

3 Big Ideas, Tips or Strategies for this week

1. Skills – There are so many skills you learnt that you are now extremely comfortable for you to do (driving, swimming, etc.). Once in a while, you need to assess all your skills, congratulate yourself on becoming comfortable in them, and then, most importantly, start acquiring new skills that you are NOT comfortable yet.

2. Thinking – “When making plans, think big. When making progress, think small.”.

3. Living – Staying alive is just breathing or even hibernating. But living, is bringing all the colours, forces, and emotions together and creating meaning every day. Breathe to stay alive and LIVE to become limitless.

2 Stories, Quotes, or Case-Studies for this week

1. If you can see it, you can be it.

In the ‘70s, Arnold Schwarzenegger had reached the peak of his bodybuilding career and then decided to retire. Back then he was not as famous as now.

In 1976, a journalist asked him: “Now that you have retired from the bodybuilding scene, what do you plan to do next?”  Schwarzenegger smiled at him and calmly replied: “I’m going to be a movie star in Hollywood.”

The report was surprised and rather amused by Schwarzenegger’s plans. He couldn’t imagine how this huge body builder with his poor English and his Austrian accent could hope to a Hollywood movie star.  “And how do you plan to make this dream come true”? the reporter asked. “The same way I became the most famous body builder in the world. I will create a vision of who I want to be, and then I will start living like that person in my mind as if it were already true.”

Sounds simplistic and childish, right? Well, it worked for Arnold!

At first all of the agencies rejected him because of his over-sized body and his accent. Let alone, that his surname was impossible for an American to pronounce. But in the end, Schwarzenegger reached his goal and became one of the most famous and highest paid movie stars in Hollywood! And after that, his next goal, a political career, was also accomplished when he was elected Governor of California.

Just to know, Arnold’s family wasn’t supportive at first. They wanted him to be a police officer like his father, or play a “normal” sport like soccer instead of pursuing a bodybuilding career. Arnold had to go against what others wanted for him so that he could discover his own path of success.  Remember: “If you can see it, you can be it.”

2. A fortunate mailing mistake!

A company hired a marketing consultant to help with a small postal mailing to the purchasing departments of hundreds of big corporations.

The consultant drafted the letter and sourced the list in a spreadsheet. Thereafter, the marketing department of the company carried on the project.

One month later, the marketing consultant found out that a trainee working in the company’s marketing department had changed the order of the rows in the spreadsheet, by sorting only the company name column and not all the columns together.

As a result, every letter (about 500) was sent to the wrong address, at the headquarters of another corporation. Interestingly, the marketing department reported a particularly high response.

They investigated the matter and found out that this mailing mistake was the cause.

An unusually high percentage of the sales letters were opened and read, apparently due to the irresistible temptation of reading another company’s mail!

1. Productivity Tool – When it comes to visualising ideas, many people find mind-maps very intuitive and stimulating. MindMeister is a powerful mind mapping tool and the basic version is free. 2 Stories, Quotes, or Case-Studies for this week

1. Understanding People

In the year 322 BC, Kautilya (a.k.a. Chanakya) wrote his famous work, ‘Chanakya Neeti’, which roughly translates to ‘Chanakya’s Ethics’. This brilliant teacher was also responsible for setting up the mighty Mauryan Empire. In one of his teachings on understanding other people, he writes, “Test an employee while in the discharge of his duty, a relative during difficulty, a friend in adversity, and the spouse… during misfortune.”

2. John’s Crazy Socks

The story of this quirky business had the Work for Good team smiling for days, proving the success of their mission to provide “happiness through socks”.

The business was started by John Cronin and his father Mark. The business was inspired by John’s love of crazy socks’ and his father’s desire to help him build a place in a world in which many with Down’s Syndrome are excluded. In a little over a year, they have shipped more than 42,000 orders and brought in $1.7 million in revenue. For every sock sold, they donate 5% to the Special Olympics. It’s a great example of a successful start-up business which provides hope, inspiration and gives back.

3 Big Ideas, Tips or Strategies for this week

1. Reading – Reading books provides a number of benefits for both the reader and the community. First, readers can learn new information and improve their understanding of the world. Additionally, books can provide a deeper exploration of topics than other forms of media. Finally, reading books can improve cognitive skills and contribute to a person’s personal growth.

2. Startup Leadership – In order to be a successful leader in your startup, it is important to be able to wear many hats and be able to delegate tasks. You should also be able to develop a trusting relationship with your team and be able to communicate your vision for the company. Finally, it is important to be able to stay motivated and focused on your goals.

3. Long Shift – In 2010, a collapse at the San Jose copper-gold mine in northern Chili trapped 33 men 700 metres underground. Foreman Luis Urzúa immediately recognised the seriousness of the accident and took charge, organising the men for a long-term survival situation and helping them cope mentally with the situation. He made detailed maps of the area to help with the rescue effort and co-ordinated closely with engineers on the surface.

____________

3 Big Ideas, Tips or Strategies for this week

1. Positioning – This is how you place yourself. Your positioning determines your identity in relationship with other people and your work. The top 1% have 100% clarity on all three aspects of positioning. They know where they are on the map and where they need to go. They won’t let things to ‘fall-in-place’ or rely on ‘destiny’. They create their own path and destiny with their grit, determination and discipline.

2. Packaging – When other people don’t know what you believe in, what you stand for and what you advice on your topics, then they can’t know you, like you, trust you or do anything with you. They can’t resonate with you because they can’t see what’s going on inside your mind or brain. This is the time when you feel people don’t understand you. With the right packaging, you will be able to find and communicate your message, create the right kind of content and customize each piece to specific audiences that they can understand, appreciate, and follow you easily.

3. Promoting – This is a big one and most people fail here because it’s a little tricky. The concepts of promoting is often confused with bragging or blowing your own horn, which is not true and this misconception leads to NGS – no growth syndrome. People are puzzled because they know they are good. They know they have a great product, service, program, practice or offer… whatever they are doing for work.. but still there’s no sales, no growth, no customers, nothing really big is happening. No big breakthroughs. That’s because nobody knows that you exist. Also, promoting is NOT advertising. Advertising is just one of the many vehicles of promotion.

2 Stories, Quotes, or Case-Studies for this week

1. Asking Questions

When you ask questions, it opens up new channels of communication. When that question is answered, it closes the channel. So, keep asking more questions.

2. Value Distinction

It’s not about adding ‘more’ value. It’s about adding ‘unique’ values so that you become the only one who offers such a combination.

____________

3 Big Ideas, Tips or Strategies for this week

1. Focus. When you lose focus, your mind tends to fix on what could be wrong with your life instead of what’s right.

2. Idleness. “Idleness is not just a vacation, an indulgence or a vice; it is as indispensable to the brain as vitamin D is to the body, and deprived of it we suffer a mental affliction as disfiguring as rickets. It is, paradoxically, necessary to getting any work done.”

Source: It made him better at his job, by Tim Kreider.

3. Credibility. Nothing persuades like credibility in people’s decision-making process.

_____________

2 Stories, Quotes, or Case-Studies for this week

1. A Little Secret

You don’t need the right answer to start. You can start by asking a question. Simply asking, “How can I be a better friend?” or “How can I be a healthy person?” will call forth answers naturally. In the beginning, just repeating the question is enough.

2. Real Wealth

Real wealth is not about money.

Real wealth is:

– not having to go to meetings

– not having to spend time with jerks

– not being locked into status games

– not feeling like you have to say “yes”

– not worrying about others claiming your time and energy

Real wealth is about freedom. Money can help achieve these things, but there are plenty of people who make lots of money yet aren’t free.

3 Big Ideas, Tips or Strategies for this week

1. Terse. Twitter’s 140 character limit makes you a better writer because you are forced to convey the message in such a short sentence.

2. Wealth. “Wealth creation is an evolutionarily recent positive-sum game. Status is an old zero-sum game. Those attaching wealth creation are often just seeking status.”

3. Finds. Happiness, love, and passion… aren’t things you find — they’re choices you make. True!?

_____________

2 Stories, Quotes, or Case-Studies for this week

1. Glass, Lake, Salt

The old Master instructed an unhappy young man to put a handful of salt in a glass of water and then drink it.

“How does it taste?” the Master asked.

“Not good at all,” spat the apprentice.

The Master chuckled and then asked the young man to take another handful of salt and put it into a nearby lake.

The two walked in silence to the lake.  When the apprentice swirled his handful of salt into the lake, the old man paused and said, “Now drink from the lake.”

As the water dripped down the young man’s chin, the Master asked, “How does it taste?”

“Good!” remarked the apprentice.

“Do you taste the salt?”

“No,” said the young man.

The Master sat beside this troubled young man and said, “The pain of life is pure salt, no more, no less. The amount of pain in life remains exactly the same.  But the amount we taste that pain depends on the container we put it into. So when you are in pain, the only thing you can do is to enlarge your sense of things.  Stop being a glass.  Become a lake.”

2. Confidence

Confidence isn’t walking into a room with your nose in the air, and thinking you are better than everyone else, it’s walking into a room and not having to compare yourself with anyone in the first place.

____________

3 Big Ideas, Tips or Strategies for this week

1. Struggle. “Major life changes—moving to a new city, starting a new job, ending a relationship, getting married, having kids, etc.—will often make life harder for the first 100 days before improving. This is not always true, but it’s a nice reminder that experiencing early struggle doesn’t mean it was a bad choice.”

2. Customer Focus. Obsessive customer focus led to Amazon‘s next-day delivery option. In order to create something extraordinary, one must be ‘obsessed’ about it. Passion will only get you started. Obsession is what scales it up.

3. Big-mo. The Big Mo – the big momentum. One of the most powerful driving forces for success. Swimmer Michael Phelps’ coach only let him finish training early once in 12 years, when he was allowed 15 minutes off so he could attend a school dance. But all that practice led to Big Mo, culminating in eight gold Olympic medals.

2 Stories, Quotes, or Case-Studies for this week

1. Loonshots

Ideas that seem too crazy ever to work but end up changing everything – make the difference between failure and success in both business and war. They can even determine the fates of nations. But risk-averse organisations often miss out on these great leaps forward because they’re so focused on immediate results that they overlook the importance of creating structures that encourage experimentation and innovation. Your best best? Separate your creatives from those in charge of running things and provide each with the tools they need to thrive.

2. The “common” factor

What do Martin Luther King Jr., Steve Jobs, and the Wright brother have in common? On the face of it, not a lot. They worked on different projects for different reasons at different times.

But there is one thing that unites the four of them: they all understood that no one buys into an idea, project, or product unless they understand why it exists.

This, as author Simon Sinek argues, is something you’ll find in every great leader and successful organisation. Think of it as a sense of purpose. People do their best work and inspire others when they know why they’re doing what they’re doing. This doesn’t mean striving to make money. It means engaging in purposeful activity, an approach that often results in financial gain.

____________

3 Big Ideas, Tips or Strategies for this week

1. Collaboration. Collaboration sets us up for commitment. Coercion results in compliance Commitment is better than compliance because it releases discretionary effort in people. For complex, cognitive, custom teamwork, discretionary effort is everything.

Source: Leadership is Language by David Marquet.

2. The Grateful Flow. Pick out things in your life you can be grateful for, like, “I’m grateful for my eyesight; I’m grateful I have hot water,” etc. Mention at least five so that your heart continues to generate gratefulness, this time without words. The energy you are now giving out is the Grateful Flow. As this energy emanates from your heart, your chest will soften and open. In this state you’ll feel yourself approaching an overwhelming presence, filled with the power of infinite giving. You’ve made a connection to the Source.

3. Authentic. The best way to come across as authentic as possible is by sharing your vulnerabilities. When you share your stories of challenge, pitfalls, or criticisms you have had, people perceive you as a normal human being — honest and transparent.

_____________

2 Stories, Quotes, or Case-Studies for this week

1. Delegation Dangers

The first rule of any technology used in a business is that automation applied to an efficient operation will magnify the efficiency. The second is that automation applied to an inefficient operation will magnify the inefficiency.

2. The “Wow” Balloon

Last spring I was walking in a park. A short distance ahead of me was a mom and her three-year-old daughter. The little girl was holding on to a string that was attached to a helium balloon.

All of a sudden, a sharp gust of wind took the balloon from the little girl. I braced myself for some screaming and crying.

But, no! As the little girl turned to watch her balloon go skyward, she gleefully shouted out, “Wow!”

I didn’t realize it at that moment, but that little girl taught me something.

Later that day, I received a phone call from a person with news of an unexpected problem. I felt like responding with, “Oh no, what should we do?” But remembering that little girl, I found myself saying, “Wow, that’s interesting! How can I help you?”

One thing’s for sure: Life’s always going to keep us off balance with its unexpected problems. That’s a given. What’s not preordained is our response. We can choose to be frustrated or fascinated.

No matter what the situation, a fascinated “Wow!” will always beat a frustrated “Oh, no.”

So the next time you experience one of life’s unexpected gusts, remember that little girl and make it a “Wow!” experience.

3 Big Ideas, Tips or Strategies for this week

1. Free Publicity. Ask the associations you belong to (or have membership) to feature you in an article or an interview. A powerful strategy that works really well. Most associations have newsletters and events and are always looking for contributions from its members.

2. Feel Do Be. Instead of Be (someone) → Do (task) → (so that you can) Have something (rat race)… try Feel (positive) → (so that you can) Do (tasks more effectively) → (that results in) Being who you want to become.

3. Vanishing Jobs. In the beginning, the jobs displaced by technology will be those that are dull, dangerous or dirty; eventually, it will include jobs like surgeons, anaesthesiologists or optometrists. What jobs will we lose first? Three that come to mind: Truck drivers, retail, and supermarket workers and cashiers. Why?… Because tech and automation can quickly replace these jobs.

2 Stories, Quotes, or Case-Studies for this week

1. In a mother’s womb were two babies…

One asked the other:

“Do you believe in life after delivery?” The other replied, “Why, of course. There has to be something after delivery. Maybe we are here to prepare ourselves for what we will be later.”

“Nonsense” said the first. “There is no life after delivery. What kind of life would that be?”

The second said, “I don’t know, but there will be more light than here. Maybe we will walk with our legs and eat from our mouths. Maybe we will have other senses that we can’t understand now.”

The first replied, “That is absurd. Walking is impossible. And eating with our mouths? Ridiculous! The umbilical cord supplies nutrition and everything we need. But the umbilical cord is so short. Life after delivery is to be logically excluded.”

The second insisted, “Well I think there is something and maybe it’s different than it is here. Maybe we won’t need this physical cord anymore.”

The first replied, “Nonsense. And moreover if there is life, then why has no one has ever come back from there? Delivery is the end of life, and in the after-delivery there is nothing but darkness and silence and oblivion. It takes us nowhere.”

“Well, I don’t know,” said the second, “but certainly we will meet Mother and she will take care of us.”

The first replied “Mother? You actually believe in Mother? That’s laughable. If Mother exists then where is She now?”

The second said, “She is all around us. We are surrounded by her. We are of Her. It is in Her that we live. Without Her this world would not and could not exist.”

Said the first: “Well I don’t see Her, so it is only logical that She doesn’t exist.”

To which the second replied, “Sometimes, when you’re in silence and you focus and you really listen, you can perceive Her presence, and you can hear Her loving voice, calling down from above.”

2. The Pac-Man Effect!

Mention‘s study of more than 1 billion small business mentions on social media revealed the extent to which customers interact with companies on social media. A small percentage of interactions—only 6 percent—are negative. The remaining 94 percent are positive or neutral, with neutral conversations—your average, every day, run-of-the-mill interactions—accounting for 76 percent of total mentions.

When plotted on a pie chart, these conversations look a bit like Pac-Man. Hence, the Pac-Man Effect. So, don’t worry… if you are just ‘consuming’ content on social networks, it’s time to being the ‘creator’ as well.
