But to me &#8211; and quite a few other people I asked &#8211; it sounded kind of made up to make the point.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I thought\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYeah, cool story &#8211; but in the real world&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>a real tortoise wouldn\u2019t stand a chance against a real hare!\u201d&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But meh\u2026 who cares, right? The story is still nice, and the point is still valid. So I still tell it to my kids, they will tell it to their kids, and so on.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Turns out, there were a few people who weren\u2019t willing to let it go that easily.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is a <em>real<\/em> world race you can watch on Youtube between a tortoise and a hare\u2026 and I\u2019ll be darned, but the tortoise actually wins. (Sorry for the spoiler.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Tortoise vs. Hare - Who Wins?\" width=\"680\" height=\"383\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/m7NuVjpi72c?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Yep. <strong>Real life tortoise: 1. Real life hare: 0.<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now here\u2019s the interesting part.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The real life race teaches us an even more <a href=\"https:\/\/raamanand.com\/insights\/wp-admin\/post.php?post=259&amp;action=edit\">important lesson<\/a> than the fictional one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You see&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the story, the tortoise won because the hare was <em>sleeping<\/em>. The tortoise never stopped plowing ahead, so it won the race. So a few things bother me about this, but probably the most important is this. Like&#8230;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>I get that the point is consistency, but at what expense? Sleep?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the real world, however, the tortoise didn\u2019t win because the hare <em>slept<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first detail you\u2019re going to notice when you watch the race\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>is the difference between the <\/strong><strong><em>approach<\/em><\/strong><strong> they\u2019re taking!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The rabbit gets a massive head start. Obviously. It\u2019s a faster animal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Problem is it keeps stopping every other second to look around its surroundings.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All the while the tortoise, at a pace that looks slower than the world\u2019s slowest snail when you catch it in a particularly sleepy mood, plows forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No distractions. Barely stops for anything no matter how tempting the background lights and noise are.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Catches the rabbit. Moves past it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And WINS!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, this reminds me a lot of <a href=\"https:\/\/raamanand.com\/insights\/wp-admin\/post.php?post=238&amp;action=edit\">aspiring authors<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>You\u2019re either a tortoise or a hare!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You see, if you\u2019re a rabbit it doesn\u2019t matter how much raw talent you\u2019ve got.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s like having the genes to be an Olympic swimmer, but every time you go to the pool, all you do is look at other people, the lights, or you think about what you\u2019re going to eat after the lesson is over, and so on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You don\u2019t stand a chance this way.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the personal branding space, it\u2019s being constantly distracted by every \u201cnew thing\u201d that pops up on your radar. Try it for a few weeks, decide that you\u2019re not getting the results you want (which are more often than not completely unreasonable). So you switch to something else.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All you\u2019ll have in a couple of years is a whole ton of money spent on different courses, products, etc., perhaps a bunch of unused domains and accounts on every platform possible, unfinished projects and\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A deep, unending frustration.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the other hand, <strong>if the tortoise was an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stardombooks.com\">aspiring author<\/a>, here\u2019s what it would do.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Focus on the task at hand.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Have enough trust to see it out till the end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Put in every reasonable effort, consistently, day in, day out, and never lose sight of the goal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is what makes the difference between all the first-time authors who reside in the dreaded \u201cgetting started hell\u201d where they postpone their book project endlessly&#8230;. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2026 and the more established INFLUENCERS who stick to one thing until they succeed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I can\u2019t tell you how many experts I\u2019ve met who aren\u2019t all that talented but still run circles around people who are much more creative, smarter, and more perceptive\u2026 simply because they know to stick to one thing until it works or they can, with certainty, say that it doesn\u2019t work.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Think about <em>your<\/em> situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What would be the one thing that you need to focus on before anything else? What would happen if you dedicated 80% of your time to it until you made it work, and then focused on the next most important thing, and then the next, and so on?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>You\u2019d become unstoppable, that\u2019s what!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, I\u2019m not suggesting you drop everything else in your life to master, I don\u2019t know, <a href=\"http:\/\/stardombooks.com\">writing a book<\/a>. But let\u2019s say you have 3 hours every week to work on your book. That\u2019s 180 minutes. What if you spent 80% of it (144 minutes) JUST on writing (as an example) until you absolutely nailed it &#8211; and everything else had the remaining 36 minutes, no more?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s how you win races. Focus, not speed.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, over time, speed will become more important so you\u2019ll need both\u2026 but from what I\u2019ve observed, that becomes the issue when you want to grow from 7 figures to 8.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>You know the story about the tortoise and the hare &#8211; we all do.
